Our Mission

The mission of the WNC Tenants Network is to build solidarity among tenants and between renters and the community. We envision a world where housing is a human right and renters are empowered to come together for projects to improve our neighborhoods. We will organize mutual aid networks and empower renters and community supporters to advocate for tenants’ rights, fight for affordable housing, and create a just and equitable housing system. The WNC Tenants Network is affiliated with the North Carolina Tenants Union which launched in April 2024 and is composed of tenants’ unions from all areas of the state.

Our History

The WNC Tenants Network was formed in the summer of 2023 out of a series of tenants’ rights workshops that were a collaborative effort between Just Economics and Pisgah Legal Services. The network has been meeting regularly and has formed two caucus groups: one for public housing residents and one for tenants renting on the private market. Both groups are focusing on living conditions because aside from affordability, adverse living conditions was the most common complaint tenants had. Tenants are working on creating a Tenants Bill of Rights for the city of Asheville.

The WNC Tenants Network lobbied the city of Asheville to add the ability to file complaints regarding violations of the city’s Minimum Housing Code to the Asheville App. After several meetings with city staff, they have agreed to add it to the app.
