Just Economics Community Organizer, 40 hours/week
Just Economics of Western North Carolina (JE) is a regional, economic justice membership organization based in Asheville, NC. Just Economics’ mission is to educate, advocate, and organize for a more just and sustainable local economy that works for all in Western North Carolina. We work toward that mission through our policy advocacy, living wage employer certification and grassroots education and engagement work. Just Economics has successfully advocated for some of the first living wage and paid family leave policies in the region, leads the largest local voluntary living wage employer certification program in the country, and has worked with hundreds of directly impacted people to create positive change in our local communities. We believe the best community change comes about when people most impacted by the problem are engaged in advocating for the solutions. We work to advance living wages & better working conditions, affordable housing, and better transit.
We are seeking a full-time Community Organizer to work together with our Housing and Wages Organizer to advance our work with the WNC Tenants Network, Better Buses Together and the WNC Workers’ Assembly.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Issue Area Organizing: Work as a part of the JE team to do focused organizing work with impacted people in our 3 areas of work: living wages/worker justice, affordable housing, and transit. Lead meetings, plan events, and coordinate activities of our strategy teams.
- Outreach: Work with the JE organizing team to determine the best ways to reach and engage people impacted by the issues we are working to change.
- Strategy Development: Use the JE campaign model and work as a team to develop effective campaigns to create positive change.
- Relationship Building and Maintenance: Build relationships with members, low-wage workers, and impacted people with the intention of strengthening the movement for economic justice.
- Grassroots Community Engagement Committee Support/Management: Meet with members and work to build a robust committee and maintain the committee’s work.
- Workshop Development/Facilitation: Help develop tools to better engage grassroots members of our community in public decisions that impact their lives.
- General JE Staff: Work as part of a team dedicated to building a just and sustainable local economy.
- Professional Development: Continue to build professional skills that will support JE’s work and contribute to a skilled team working toward our mission.
Desired skills and experiences:
-Commitment to the mission of Just Economics
– Experience in nonprofits anti-poverty work, and/or grassroots social change
-Ability to work with a team
– Community organizing and workshop facilitation experience preferred
– Experience working with low-income people and communities of color
– Understanding of generational & systematic oppression and economics/labor history
– Understanding and familiarity with Asheville, Buncombe and/or the WNC Region’s challenges and opportunities
– Computer proficiency–experience with G Suite, Canva, Microsoft Office suites a plus
– Self-motivated, self-starting and able to work well with others
– Good interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
– Well-organized, attention to detail
– Flexible availability, willing to work nights and weekends as needed
– Bilingual in English-Spanish a plus but not required
– Bachelor’s degree a plus but not required
Supervision:
The Community Organizer reports to and is supervised by the Executive Director, who conducts annual evaluations and routine check-ins.
Compensation and Benefits: Salary Range: $51,000-$53,000. Just Economics does not provide health insurance but does provide a quarterly benefit equal to $3,120/year, paid time off, annual staff support/wellness budget and annual performance bonus program.
