The Beer Guy: Homebrew to flow at new Just Economics Brew-off

July 22nd, 2010

Usually, the only way to drink homebrewed beer around here is to be part of the homebrewing community or to know someone who is. But on Saturday, local homebrewers are opening up their taps at the new Just Economics Brew-off event, 2-4 p.m. outside the Wedge Brewing Co., 125B Roberts St.

More than 40 homebrewers will be featured at this competition, serving a wide variety of homebrewed beers. Various awards and honors will be bestowed, including one from the Beer Guy, who will pick his favorite ale or lager served at the event. Member of the public can also choose their favorite beer in a people’s choice award. Admission is $15, which also covers membership in the Just Economics organization, which is working to promote a “living wage” in Asheville (in case you’re wondering, that would be $9.85 an hour for employers who provide insurance, $11.85 for those who don’t).

Bring along some spending money to buy chicken served by Kyte’s Catering, and it’s a good idea to bring a lawn chair. But leave your pets at home.

Mountain Xpress Brew Off Article 16 June 2010

July 22nd, 2010

Just Economics (whose mission is to “to educate, advocate, and organize for a strong and sustainable economy that works for all in Western North Carolina”) holds Asheville’s inaugural home brew competition and tasting this weekend.

The event, held outside of the Wedge Brewery in the River Arts District, focuses solely on home brewed beer (rather than on craft beer, as is the theme of other local beer festivals). Says press for the event, “Sample over 40 of Western North Carolina’s finest home brew beers! Get a free commemorative tasting glass with the JE Brew Off logo!”

According to the Citizen-Times, “Chicken will be sold, and a lot of awards will be handed out … There’s also a People’s Choice prize awarded by those who attend. This is not a scholarly competition, but rather a celebration of homebrewing.”

Tickets are $15, which includes a membership to Just Economics. Saturday, June 19, 2-4 p.m. Info at justeconomicswnc.org.
